APRÈS MARIANO FORTUNY

APRÈS MARIANO FORTUNY is Ellis’ response to a 2017 visit to the Palazzo Fortuny in the San Beneto district of Venice. This total immersion into the world of Mariano Fortuny, following several days staying on the island of Guidecca where Ellis was able to view Venice from across the water taking in everyday scenes, was the inspiration for this collection of images. Once back in the studio in South West France, Ellis began to experiment with the dying and printing techniques that she has explored over many years, to create fabrics that evoke the fragility and ephemeral quality of the city. Digitally printed images are literally eaten into by the “dévoré” technique; Ellis has always been interested by mixing new technology with old techniques, it’s as though a snapshot of Venice has been left out in the rain.
