CURIOSITIES

These images are inspired by my fascination for the bizarre, curious and surreal. Museum displays, classical paintings, palaeontology are the starting points for these flights of imagination.
The dévoré technique allows me to delve below the surface and create imaginary creatures and scenarios.
Using colour, texture and other imagery the figures are transported into another realm. Areas become transparent revealing shadows or other elements, the superfluous becomes intriguing, and reflections create ghostly images behind negative spaces.

EMPREINTE 2

Silk screen and dévoré on silk viscose between two sheets of 6mm. acrylic glass (total thickness 1.2 cm.) 100 x 50 cm. Wall mounted on acrylic glass support. The inspiration for this piece came from an exquisite piece of silk lining from an antique kimono that a friend brought to the studio. I immediately thought of the body imprinted onto the fabric, so created the image using silk screen printing and dévoré. I added a subtle tattoo print over the body, like a scarification – then floated fragments of a kimono over the top in 23.5 carat gold leaf.

INTIMOLOGY 1

100 x 73 cm. Silk screen, monoprint and dévoré on silk

This picture is one of a series, inspired by my love of curiosity cabinets and museum displays. the intricate plant / insect forms float in front of the figures behind giving the impression of tattooed or decorated bodies. The two merge to create fantastical figures – both intimate and botanical. An expressive monoprint behind contrasts dramatically with the meticulous silk screen printing of the figures above.

INTIMOLOGY 2

100 x 73 cm. Silk screen, monoprint and dévoré on silk. Private collection.

This picture is the second in the series, inspired by my love of curiosity cabinets and museum displays. the intricate plant / insect forms float in front of the figures behind giving the impression of tattooed or decorated bodies. The two merge to create fantastical figures – both intimate and botanical. An expressive monoprint behind contrasts dramatically with the meticulous silk screen printing of the figures above.

INTIMOLOGY 6 SILK SCREEN PRINT

Edition 1:1 78 x 56 cm. Silk screen on hand painted ground, copper foil on 300gm. watercolour paper.

This image derives from my original textile piece “Intimology”. These hybrid “creatures” appear as botanical studies but on closer inspection the nude figures suggest a more intimate scenario, hence the name “Intimology”.

INTIMOLOGY 7

CLAIRE DE LUNE 1

59 x 47cm. Silk screen and dévoré on silk, silver metal foil

This picture is one of my music series, inspired by the famous Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. The folded paper manuscript forms the skirt and the figure is created with elements of music with the moon. The outlines of the trees in the forest are highlighted by the glow of the silver foil from behind.

DEUX GARÇONS 1

88 x 72 cm. Silk screen and dévoré on silk.

In this picture the two figures appear different, but they are in fact exactly the same – one with lighter hair and one with lipstick. It is a celebration of androgeny, questioning feminine / masculine steryotypes.

EMPREINTE TOILE

166x 63 cm, two pieces, silk. Private collection.

Lucrezia

This piece is inspired by my visit to Florence where I saw the original painting of Lucrezia de Medici. After reading the book “The Marriage Portrait” by Maggie O’Farrell I created artwork using AI to imagine the young duchess, which I used to create screens, dye, print and dévoré fabric.

Silk screen and dévoré on silk viscose between two sheets of 5mm. acrylic glass (total thickness 1 cm.) 80 x 45 cm. Free standing or wall mounted.
